"The Bock 507 easily rivals the ELAM and Brauner," concluded Vig. "Of course, you choose a mic to create a certain vibe within the larger context of a recording, and the ELAM and Brauner are certainly going to remain on the front line. But the Bock has given me another option for a go-to vocal mic. David Bock has made an incredible sounding microphone. The only question now is... should I buy a second one? It did so well on individual instruments that I'd love to hear a piano with a pair of 507s... or a stereo pair for room mics on drums. That would be amazing!"

Jimmy Douglass Adds EM-PEQ To The Mix

01/05/09

"Senator Jimmy D" using a pair of A-Designs Audio's 500 Series Pultec-style EQs for "just about everything"

MIAMI, Florida - January 2009 -- Perhaps best known for his ten-year role as R&B/hip-hop producer Timbaland's main go-to mixer/engineer, Jimmy Douglass has engineered, mixed and/or produced a truly impressive roster of talent over the past several decades, ranging from classic artists like Aretha Franklin, Foreigner, and The Rolling Stones to contemporaries like Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Justin Timberlake.

Admired by many for his talent to bring unconventional techniques into the studio as well as encourage artists to transcend genre restrictions, "Senator Jimmy D", as he's occasionally known, cut his teeth at Atlantic Records' studios in the '70s working for legendary engineer/producers like Tom Dowd, Jerry Wexler, and Arif Mardin. As a result of those years, Douglass has developed golden ears for what sounds good when it comes to pro audio equipment. And one of the most recent things to get the thumbs up from the versatile studio wizard is A-Designs Audio's EM-PEQ, a 500 Series-format equalizer that sonically nods to the classic Pultec EQP-1A sound.

"I first saw the EM-PEQ back at PotLuckCon and thought it was cool, so I ended up getting a hold of a pair," says Douglass, who has his new EQs racked up in an API Lunchbox. "I've had them for several months now and like them very much. They're warm and clear, and unmistakably bring to mind a very pleasing vintage sound."

Whether he uses the EM-PEQs in his own Miami-based studio, The Spot, or takes them around to other rooms, Douglass finds them useful for a broad spectrum of applications. "I've literally put them across just about everything I've engineered and mixed in one facet or another over the past three months," he says. "They're great for drums, especially kicks and snares, as well as really nice on both vocals and guitars. The EM-PEQs are very realistic and clear, yet add a nice warmth that does, indeed, truly remind me of the Pultec, but for a fraction of the price one would pay for an original EQP-1A."
